Three adjustments to the baseline:
• If your target RH is above 80% (mushroom cultivation, cold-storage produce, high-humidity process): step up one model — high RH is harder to hold against air infiltration.
• If the space has frequent door openings, loading activity, or high ventilation: add 30–50% capacity, or distribute several smaller units instead of one large one.
• If humidification runs 24/7 (cultivation, cold storage, process): step up one model so the unit is not at 100% duty, which shortens atomizing-plate life.
Direct the mist outlet into the main air path of the room — for retail, near a ceiling fan or HVAC return; for cultivation, above or alongside the canopy. Avoid aiming mist straight at cold surfaces (refrigerated cases, cold exterior walls in winter, electronics), where the fine droplets can condense before they evaporate. For larger spaces, distributed units placed across the floor hold more even RH than a single oversized one.
An ultrasonic humidifier atomizes whatever is in the water. Tap-water minerals atomize into a fine white dust on nearby surfaces and speed up scale on the atomizing plates. For visible commercial spaces (retail floor, restaurant dining, hotel lobby) and clean spaces, feed the unit with reverse-osmosis (RO) water to remove the dust. For back-of-house cultivation and industrial use, tap water is workable, but plate cleaning and replacement come around more often.
Atomizing plates are rated 3,500–5,000 service hours. At 12 hours a day (typical commercial duty), that is roughly 10–14 months per set; at 24 hours a day (cultivation, cold storage, process), plan on 5–7 months. Replacement is done on site — the unit does not return to the factory. Keep one spare plate set on hand for continuous-duty lines so a swap takes minutes.
The atomization itself is silent, running above the range of human hearing at around 1.7 MHz. Audible noise comes from the cabinet fan and water flow. For customer-facing installations — restaurant dining rooms, hotel lobbies, retail floors — place the unit out of direct earshot and check the model's operating noise level at the inquiry stage.

An ultrasonic humidifier adds moisture as a cool mist without heat. A piezoelectric plate under the water vibrates at ultrasonic frequency, around 1.7 MHz — far above human hearing — and the vibration shatters the water surface into fine droplets of 0.5–5 microns. A quiet fan carries that mist out, and the tiny droplets evaporate into the air within a minute. Because nothing is boiled, it uses much less energy than a steam humidifier and gives fast, precise humidity control.
Ultrasonic output is rated in kilograms of water per hour, and the right size comes from the space and its target RH, not floor area alone. As a rough guide: 20–60 m² at 45–60% RH suits a 2 kg/h unit; a 120–250 m² produce section or mushroom room at 60–85% suits 6 kg/h; a 400–500 m² space at high RH suits 12 kg/h; and textile halls, cleanrooms, and large facilities move to the 18–30 kg/h industrial models. Targets are application-specific: office, hotel, and retail comfort 40–55% RH; electronics and cleanroom ESD control 45–55%; supermarket produce and cold storage 85–95%; mushroom fruiting 85–95%; grow rooms 55–75% by stage; wine and cigar rooms 60–75%; textile and printing to the process spec. Set the target a little below the top of the range so the unit is not running at full duty, and verify the built-in humidistat against a separate calibrated hygrometer in the first week.
White dust is the minerals in tap water, atomized along with the water and settling on nearby surfaces. Ultrasonic humidifiers mist whatever is in the water, so the fix is water treatment: feed the unit with reverse-osmosis (RO) water, under about 50 ppm dissolved solids, and the dust disappears. For customer-facing retail, restaurant dining, and clean spaces, RO is the standard. For back-of-house cultivation and industrial areas where some dust is acceptable, tap water works, but expect more frequent plate cleaning and replacement.

This is common in offices, hotels, and light commercial buildings on central air. Confirm the model and duct configuration at the inquiry stage.
Yes. Ultrasonic units are a common choice for commercial mushroom cultivation because they hold the high 85–95% RH fruiting rooms need and produce cool mist that suits low growing temperatures. The demanding part is the high setpoint plus frequent door openings and continuous duty, so most farms distribute several units on per-room humidistats rather than relying on one large unit.
